David P. Osborn, Ph.D.
Executive Director, Health Care Solutions Group

David Osborn serves as the Executive Director of the Health Care Solutions Group (HCSG), sponsored by Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the Nashville Health Care Council. In this role he leads the Group’s efforts to bring health care, business and government leaders together to lead and support improvement in the U.S. health care system. HCSG is designed to facilitate the development of solutions to the challenges facing our health care system, as well as lead and support action to test, demonstrate and implement change that will make a difference. David also holds a faculty appointment in the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

David has spent most of his career helping healthcare organizations transform the way they perform. He has significant experience in the area of information technology and its use in transforming business processes and systems. Much of his work has focused on human capital and how it can be developed and deployed to increase individual and organizational effectiveness. He has experience in organization design and development, web-enabled training and development, knowledge management strategies and tools, and e-Business strategies and technologies. His clients have included integrated delivery systems, academic medical centers, managed care organizations, pharmaceutical companies, medical device manufacturers, financial services organizations and manufacturing companies.

David previously served as the executive director of the Vancerbilt Center for Better Health. Before joining Vanderbilt, Dr. Osborn served as a partner and Managing Director at KPMG Consulting, where he led the Health Care e-Business Strategy practice, as well as the national practice focused on Learning Solutions and Knowledge Management. He has also held positions at Andersen Consulting, Quorum Health Resources, and Executive Learning, Incorporated. He is a member of several professional organizations, and has published articles in several professional publications, including Hospital and Health Services Administration, The Academy of Management Review, and MX Magazine. He has made numerous presentations to professional groups and conferences, including the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, the American Nurses Association, the Canadian Hospital Association, the Society for Human Resources Management, the British National Health Authority, the West Virginia Healthcare Association, the American Production and Inventory Control Society, and the Nashville Health Care Council.

David holds a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Harding University, and a Ph.D. from the College of Business Administration at the University of Tennessee.
